Junior Counselor & Volunteers

Junior Counselors - Boys & Girls entering grades 11 & 12

 

Camp Reed Junior Counselor volunteer staff receive training and then volunteer 1-2 weeks of their summer at Camp Reed. JC responsibilities include getting to know and serve campers as a positive role model, assisting in a variety of camp activities, camp maintenance areas, and working directly with Camp Reed staff in a leadership role. Application process, training fee and weekly store deposit is required.

All questions, inquiries, and communication regarding the JC program and/or the application process should be done by the Junior Counselors themselves.

We view our Junior Counselors as staff who carry out the mission of Camp Reed.

Do you want to be a JC? Here's what to do:


 Step 1:  APPLICATION AND FEES

1. Go to: Volunteer Opportunities. Find Camp Reed Junior Counselor and complete your    volunteer application. *make sure you are using the full webpage, not the mobile site*

2. Download the Health History Information Form. Print and fill out the form completely. Mail or drop off at the Camp Reed office: see contact address below.

3. Pay applicable JC Fees: Fee waivers are available on an as-needed basis. Please call.

  • $50 Application Fee (The non-refundable application fee covers JC application, background check, and camp T-shirt and is due with the Health History and Information Form. Your application will not be processed until the Health History Information Form and application fee are received.)
  • $75 Retreat Weekend Training fee (5/19-5/21)**
  •  $30 per week (JC week deposit PER volunteer week) Your deposit will be credited directly to your store account and will be forfeited if you cancel your week.

Fees may be paid by check payable to YMCA Camp Reed sent with the Health History Information Form OR by calling the YMCA Customer Information Center at 509 777 9622.

4.  Letters will be mailed to Junior Counselors in early May informing them of which weeks they have been assigned (make sure to indicate your top choices on the Health History and Information form) . If you have any questions about the application process, fees, or assignment of weeks, please contact Jenny “Java” Weddle or call 509 720 5632.
 
FINAL DEADLINE: Applications received by March 10 will receive priority scheduling.
 
Step 2: Attend a Pre-Camp Training

All Junior Counselors are required to attend pre-camp training. This training includes Mission Emphasis, JC Role, Child Development, Cabin Management, Work Area Training, Child Abuse Protection Training, and Program overview. There are two options for this training:

  • **OPTION 1: Fri May 19 - Sun May 21, 2016 retreat at Camp Reed from Friday at 6pm until Sunday at 12 pm. Includes JC training PLUS bonding on the Camp Reed Challenge Course. This option is STRONGLY recommended to all Junior Counselors, so please plan accordingly. This training will require a $75 fee. Sign up by checking the appropriate box on the Health History Information Form.
  • OPTION 2: Tuesday, June 6, 5-8pm at the YMCA Corporate Office. Those who are unable to attend the JC weekend retreat are required to attend this training which will cover the trainings listed above. This training does not require a fee. Sign up by checking the appropriate box on the Health History Information Form.

Step 3: Due June 2
Obtain your food handler permit from the Spokane Regional Health District. If you live outside of Spokane County you may obtain a food permit from your local county health district. Your week will be canceled if you do not have a permit on file by June 3. Your food handler permit can be obtained online by following the link above. Mail the permit to the Camp Reed address above or scan and email to Java at jweddle@ymcaspokane.org.
 
Step 4: Complete an Auction Procurement Form with a service or item valued at $100. Our 2017 auction will be held Sat, Oct 14. Please plan to complete your Auction Procurement Form very early!

Medical Volunteers – Traditional Camp & Camp Goodtimes

2.   Download the Health History Information Form. Fill out the form completely. Mail or drop off at the Camp Reed office: 1126 N Monroe, Spokane, WA 99201.
