Swimming Skills Evaluation

All Skill Levels - Ages 14+

This is an opportunity to meet with a lifeguard instructor to evaluate your swimming skills and provide guidance for enrolling in a lifeguarding class. The evaluation is free and takes approximately 15 minutes.

Contact Marty Newell-Large to schedule your evaluation.

Lifeguard Readiness

All Skill Levels - Ages 14+

This class is designed for those interested in becoming a lifeguard, but are not ready to complete the prerequisite swimming skills. Under the direction of a certified Lifeguard Instructor, participants will learn or refine the swimming skills necessary to participate in an American Red Cross Lifeguarding course.

Classes are 45 minutes long and run once per week for four weeks. For more instruction, sign up for multiple classes at the same time, such as Tuesday and Thursday.

Participants will work toward the following goals:

  • Swim 300 yards continuously using freestyle, breaststroke or a combination of the two.
  • Swim 20 yards, dive down 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound brick and bring it back to the surface. Then swim the brick back to the starting point keeping both hands on the brick and the face out of the water. All in less than 1 minute 40 seconds.
  • 2 minutes of continuous treading water without using arms.

Class Times:

The American Red Cross is planning to update their lifeguarding curriculum on January 3, 2017. As a result, the YMCA of the Inland Northwest will not be teaching lifeguard readiness during the months of December or January. That time will be used to ensure that our instructors are prepared to teach the new curriculum to the highest of standards when we resume classes in February.

Fees:

Cost for 4 lessons -   Program Member $35 | Youth Member $17.50 | Y Member $17.50
